Bigz ‘The Bigz Bang Theory’ Mixtape (2/5)

On the back of a 2011′s ‘Quantum Leap’ mixtape, and a successful tour supporting NDubz, Bigz drops his new mixtape ‘The Bigz Bang Theory’ (see what he did there? LOL).

Now I’ve been a fan of this guy for  minute, and not simply because he’s fly as hell. Big bars, clever witty punchlines, and swag so far off the meter you need a rocket propelled back pack to try catchup – swooooosh!

But here’s the problem. That guy I described above is not all over this mixtape. He is on there, don’t get me wrong, but to me it sometimes feels like that NDubz tour and the love he got from their fans has influenced what Bigz records now. Yeah he cocky as hell on the Versa Beatz & self produced ‘Bazinga’, but I can’t listen to ‘Head Knocker’ or ‘Ordinary Me’ as they vex me too much.

For me my dude shines on joints like ‘Expensive Taste’ where he spits “Cause I rose from the slums through debiting/ Now I clock hoes like the young Duke Ellington “. Also on ‘Stay Freestyle’ where he spits “The fat prophet hustle for a fat profit / I’m not well since I suffered from a lack of it”. Of course I can’t forget ‘MVP’ where Bigz rides with his longtime associates and Eurogang doozy’s S.A.S, and they all come correct like the proven vets they all are.

Don’t get it twisted Bigz always drops solid work, and  BBT is a solid mixtape. It’s just that for a hip hop head like myself it would be great to get the 100% flashy-fat-fly guy who is obviously so damn talented. But don’t sleep on him please, check the CV, he’s crazy with it. His old  ’fire in the booth’ for Charlie Sloth and Westwood appearances ALONE ensure he stays in the upper echelon of UK MC’s (check em out on youtube).

Maybe Bigz should release a mixtape for the hip hop headz, and singles for the NDublets that will undoubtably propel him to the stardom he seeks, and so rightly deserves. I hope he does well with this and his team keep going for the top spot. I just can’t f wit dat pop shit, and that’s probably the reason I’m not as flashy and fly as Bigz.

Blade Brown ‘Bags and Boxes 2′ Mixtape (2012)

The wait is finally over. Blade Brown blesses us with the highly anticipated sequel to his classic ‘Bags And Boxes’ mixtape from 2010. Well was it worth the wait? The answer is a phat YES.

For me B&B1 was outstanding in the imagery and menace that Blade created with the joints. Some call Blade a 1 dimensional rapper, always talking bout the same ish. Well you know what, I like my gangsta rappers to stay just that… GANGSTA. So when my boy tried sutn a lil different on his follow up ‘Financial Times’ for me there were more misses than hits.

So back to the successful formula straight away with joints like ‘Mr Brown’ & ‘Break Bread’ where Blade spits “I’m doing 150 in the tiptronic / Courtesy of that paper with the bitch on it”. THAT”S my nukka right there.

Most online be quoting from the lead single ‘Life Of Mine’ when Blade spat “Remember when £10gs was a dream? / Now we got £10gs in our jeans and I / Probably spent £10gs on my jeans / I was built for this life yeah the G’s in my genes”. Now thats piff music.

Look you ain’t gonna get deep thought provoking lyrics from Blade, instead he gives you clever punchlines, metaphors, and some of the hardest bars in the game.

However the mixtape is not perfect, but for me that comes down to some of the beats, and some of the featured artists who just ain’t keeping up with the don. However when it works it really works. On ‘Picture Perfect’ Squeeks continuous to menace the listener with the hard ish. Sincere bodies ’30k’, and there is strong support from Skepta, G-Fresh, Sdg and Colours.

Overall it’s a winner, and sends a message to these other rappers tryna be all things to all people. STICK TO WHAT YOUR GOOD AT FAM.

Check out: ‘Mr Brown’, ‘Picture Perfect’, ‘Life of Mine’, ‘Rap Liars’, & ’30k’.

OK OK I owe Kendrick an apology. I’m big enough to admit it.

People kept telling me ‘listen to Ken’ and I’m like “I did, Section80 was some wierdo bullshit”, F Kendrick!. So I wasn’t tryna hear any talk about a new album. But that ‘Swimming Pools’ got me open, I can’t lie. So I gave his latest disc a listen, and you know what… it’s pretty damn good.

His concepts are bananas, so if you tired of listening to the same ol formula he dat guy! Tracks like ‘Real’ and the Dr Dre produced ‘The Recipe’ are audio perfection. This is definately a 4/5 speaker album… there I said it. I am currently eating humble pie as I write this, and my Twitter followers maybe laughing as well. Oh well.

The only reason I can’t give this a 9 or 10 is I can’t stand that the dude has bitten Madlib’s (Quasimoto) style on tracks like ‘Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe’. I can’t respect dat! (You lot will probably say he’s paying homage, or you puppies will be like “who dat?”).

However I still think Jay Rock is the hardest in that talented clique Black Hippy, so I am looking forward to his new shit TRUSS.

Brandy ‘Two Eleven’ Deluxe (2012)

She’s BACK! The beautiful voice of an angel releases a studio album for 2012. Like many I have found the RnB genre a lil bit formulaic of late, and I was getting a little bit bored. There just seemed to be more of the same ol shit being released, and nothing really making me feel right. So I was pleasantly surprised to hear this album.

Yeah there are a few Mmmmm moments, but songs like ‘Do You Know What You Have’ and ‘Scared of Beautiful’ got me OPEN maaaayn. But it’s definitely not outstanding so can’t get a 5/5 from your fatboy, or near perfect to get a 4/5 either. However Two Eleven is worth a solid 3 as its really good and I liked it a lot.

S/O my brudda the super producer Harmony who keeps me up to date with the latest RnB. #Respect.

Dufflebag Ran dropped this in September 2012 and I have been on it since. After a lil hiatus doing bird Ran came back in the lab to bless da masses with a lil New Jersey hardbody muzik.

I’ve always rated Ransom, and I have quite a lot of tunes on the ipod already. He’s one of them eMCees that you really don’t wanna put on a feature, cause he’s liable to body the beat and mess up your lead artist LOL. However it does seem that Ran has been unfortunate the way the game has played out.

Hopefully this mixtape will reopen some the ears as it’s a mixture of styles on it. Not just the hardbody music Ran is known for, but also a few introspective tunes as well. However I am all about Ran with the duffle, so although I respect the versatility, I’m feeling the hard shit more.

Listen to ‘Sunshine’ for the introspective Ransom. For that hard ish listen to ‘The Unlucky’, ‘Advil Sunglasses’,  ’I'm a G’, and many more. My nukka!

It’s goin down right now! My first hip hop rant in a decade!

My first hip hop rant in a decade!

The UK ‘urban’ music scene is in a bit of disarray at the moment in my opinion. Don’t get it twisted, there a few artists making a lot of money right now, and those working around/for them also getting them £P’s in. But there does not seem to be anything in the mainstream arena that epitomises the urban sound, that authentic neck snapping hip hop banger that man on road can be like  ”bwoy”. I always keep one eye on the underground anyway as a hip hop purist it’s important to me, and something I have been doing since a teenager. I have never really been a ‘mainstream’ dude, so I KNOW there are some amazing talent plugging away out there.

However I understand how the radio playlist politics play out, and how a selection of people, often from a demographic that does not reflect the ‘urban’ market, decide what the general public get to hear on regular rotation. I also understand it is the regular spins that ensure the greatest chance of commercial success. The decision to put an artist’s song in category A, B, or C of an independent or major radio stations DAYTIME playlist has commercial ramifications for the artist. Even if you tick all the boxes ‘popular artists, internationally known artists on the hook, big budget video, pluggers paid off’ you can’t guarentee a shot at the ‘A’ Playlist.

It’s unfair to expect a hip hop artist to continue to create the music they love without receiving recompense due to the unjust politics of radio, but the end results are a mish mash of pop genres which alienate the ‘urban’ audience. How are you gonna make music that you don’t even like to listen to yourself? When your ipod playlist is full of US artists holding down that hip hop sound, or grime artists battling in the underground scene, your there making club/dance music hybrids with ‘abc’ raps.

People respect success I know, but surely a musical legacy is built on authenticity. Do you want people to remember your tunes for years to come as classics of a genre? Or are you happy with quick fame and change now?

It’s a personal choice I know, and some of my favourite artists stay broke which I hate. But I have said for years that the way it is set up in UK there is NO WAY we could have had a UK version of JayZ, Nas, Rick Ross, Mobb Deep, Lil Kim, or even a Wacka Flocka.

As a hip hop fan I could not have been more happier when Wretch32 went number1. Finally a lyricist at the top of the charts, I had to be happy right? I was for sure, he’s a rappers rapper, a true lyrical genius, but I would have been happier if he made hip hop music and STILL achieved success. Chip tried to come back to the sound he liked on his 2nd album and radio pressed the big red X on him. They wanted him to still put out that corny material, but Chip is a decent MC, and I think craved authenticity similar to the underground scene from whence he came. I’m happy he flew out to US cause the tracks I’m hearing from him now on TIP’s label are craaaaaaaaazy. If he blows stateside then watch the radio over here get gassed.

People are gonna say WTF does this old man know about shit, but I’ve been an almost exclusive hip hop fan for 30years! I’m not one of those guys stuck in a particular era either, whether it’s old school 80′s stuff, 90′s boom bap, or 00′s bling bling. I’ve seen it all, I’m a fan of the culture, so I move with the times and stay up to date with the genre. Why? Because I LOVE hip hop, and hip hop culture has defined Rap6 since he was 11years old.

I rate a lot of artists currently, although most of them are considered ‘road’ artists. But I fear they will decide to switch up the sound to get that paper also, leaving only the likes of Giggs, SAS, and Blade Brown riding for da mandem as they already got that paper. I’m watching KKoke to see if he manages to ride this road wave all the way to the top staying authentic. Also I have my eye on Scorcher but I fear because he deserves to be rolling in that £guap based on talent alone, he may feel forced to make that dance pap to get heard nationally.

But you guys want me to name names don’t you? LOL yeah that would be hip hop right… You want me to name some of the artists I respect and rate as MC’s, both lyrically and how they put it down on the mic. Those MC’s who I WISH would make the kind of ‘urban’ music that would make my neck snap off my shoulders, but may ultimately get them blacklisted off the radio LOL.  You already know them, c’mon guys, YOU KNOW!

Those who know Rap6 know I am Mr Opinionated, which is a little annoying to many, but I’m cool with everyone… seriously. Nothing I’ve said here I would not say to an artists face, and actually some of your favourite artists have heard this from me already LOL. So this rant is not to be taken as a diss to the artists, as there is no beef whatsoever. But a rant is an opinion, and this here is mine. Take it as it is, from a old dude in the genre, Pop’s to the Game ya heard.

OVER AND OUT!

The Jumpoff in Ayia Napa – OMG what just happened!

The Jumpoff came, and we sure as hell conquered!

The Event
Wednesday 11th July an epic event happened in Cyprus. The Jumpoff represented at Club Ice in Ayia Napa and the event was RAMMED! The event was scheduled for the middle of a pure HipHop week on the island, which kicked off with Charlie Sloth’s BBC ‘Fire On The Beach‘ on Monday. So in town and reppin hard were Charlie Sloth, Sniper, Sway, Wiley, KKoke and the USG/ATeam mandem, Sneakbo, Ard Adz, Mic Rightous, Claira Hermett, and many many more big names in the game.

The Battles
We decided to do both Booty and Arm Wrestle battles only, as the Pillow Fight got the club owners a lil shook. There was so many booty shakers that we had to do battles in 2 stages. The levels were off the chain and the crowd responded to the battles nice! This was the first time that the semi final was so crazy that the crowd could not easily chose the finalists. But what a final we had LOL, the winner was a TRUE professional. In the Arm Wrestle battle the ladies were greeted with topless, oiled up men, and they showed their delight. Tonk guys pumped up did their thing, and got harassed by the gal for the rest of their time on the island LOL.

S/O Nick Bright for holding me down on the decks, and a great performance by Marvel. Epic night.

The Aftermath
It was great to meet up with all the people on such a beautiful island, and we had too much joke in the hotel (s/0 Lefty USG for givin man stitches). I was only on the island 24hrs or so but managed to get stuff done, without much sleep.
The only local meal I was able to have in the time I was there was provided by Pola Costa, and I wrecked that while chilling by the beach.

Only down side was returning to the rain of UK, oh and the sandwich I bought on the EasyJet flight… Mmmm tasty NOT!

S/O the whole JumpOff team for all the hard work it took to get this right. Also all those that came to the event, you really showed how the Jumpoff family is an international thing. Respect.

4our Pillars last night was crazy!

No bullshit, just paaarty!

I gotta shout out Son of Noise for puting on a crazy show in the Underdog Gallery in London last night. 4our Pillars was a success in getting us ageing hip hop headz together, reminscing about the cornerstones of hip hop.

For those that don’t know Son Of Noise were the group that first had faith in Paragon (then known as X-Large) and put us on their album ‘Access Denied…” in 1995. This was the first time that my group was on record, so it was an important moment for us, and we learnt a lot from the seasoned vets. (Google Son Of Noise ‘Keep It Goin Pt.2′ and were the second act on the track. Youtube won’t let me upload the audio for some reason)

Mode2 did some incredible artwork all over the gallery, and some of his canvases were on sale for £4k, yep thats 4 bags people… SAY SUTTN!

Soul Mavericks brought the new school flava to the old school reunion. Great display of skills as is usual from them, and the open floor allowed many of the guests to throw down on the lino as well. It was a party ya’ll!

It was great to bump into people I haven’t seen in years, and legends I never got to meet in the music game. Don’s like Kamanchi Sly from Hijack, and MCM from Caveman, both incredible artists that left an indelible mark on British Hip Hop culture.

Personal fave moment (apart from SON’s performance)… MCM saying to me:
“Where do I know you from? Paragon… you did that Queen tune! I loved that, I BOUGHT that”

Don’t sleep on the next event people as although the numbers weren’t great, it will only get bigger truss. The vibe was incredible, and I was smiling so much my jaw aches this morning.

Shout out C, J, M & R from Son Of Noise, Hennecee, MCM, and all the headz I met down there, it was a pleasure.

A must see Hip Hop event this Friday

This event is the brainchild of the Son of Noise guys, and it is a chance to showcase the 4 elements of Hip Hop to both the new and the old crowd. There will be performances from Son of Noise, Kamanchi Sly and MCM on the night, plus it will be operating an open mic policy so anyone who wants to get up and get involved can do also. There will be loads of DJ’s and Breakers doing their thing plus some live graffiti action too.

Tickets will cost £8 and there will also be an art auction to help raise money for the Princes Foundation for Children & the Arts featuring work by the legendary Mode 2.

I will be attending this event 4real, so hopefully see you there.

Teen pregnancy rate lowest since 1969

Teen pregnancy rate lowest since 1969

Over recent years there has been pressure on UK professionals working with young people to reduce the numbers of teenage pregnancies from what has often been cited as the highest levels in Europe. The push has been 2 pronged in terms of information and contraception (sometimes unknown to the parents). There is now some evidence suggesting that some inroads have been made into this social issue.
